Built in Philadelphia as the merchantman BLACK PRINCE and converted to a light frigate, ALFRED became the first flagship of the new Continental Navy in 1775. She was the first American ship to fly the new Grand Union flag of the united Colonies. John Paul Jones commanded ALFRED briefly, at the start of his brilliant naval career.
Our new kit is based on a reconstruction by Lawrence Arnot, designer of the CONSTITUTION kit, after extensive research into similar ships of the period. He has written a 50-page instruction book which is in itself a textbook on the details of 18th Century naval design and outfitting and provides a detailed history of the ship.
Complete kit includes full-sized plans, instructions, pre-carved hull, optional planking, and all fittings, rigging line and other materials needed except paint and glue.
